A fresh and thorough inquiry into the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its partisan force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) is deemed the right way to achieve reconciliation among veterans of the various sides in the Second World War in Ukraine, and to ease apprehension and promote understanding of controversial points in Ukrainian history, and to distribute full and objective information of the tragic events of the past.

Праві сили відзначають 64-ту річницю створення УПАKYIV, May 10 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has ordered Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to restart an inquiry into the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its partisan force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

A government commission conducting the inquiry is tasked with reaching juridical and historically sound conclusions on the matter, and to work out an official government position on the activities of the OUN-UPA, deputy state secretary Markian Lubkivskiy told on Tuesday.

The president also ordered the prime minister to organize an international conference on the role Ukrainian people played in the World War II.

The only way to achieve reconciliation among veterans of the various sides in the Second World War in Ukraine, and to ease apprehension and promote understanding of controversial points in Ukrainian history, is to distribute full and objective information of the tragic events of the past, Lubkivskiy said.

He said the authorities would promote a free debate on the matter to consolidate the nation.
