History St.Michael's Contacts Bienvenue Welcome - Ukrainian
Dear friends!

The Train of Ukrainian Pioneers, a venture undertaken by the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, will be travelling with a replica of a typical accessory by here by many Ukrainian immigrants over the past 120 years – a trunk.  By the time this trunk reaches the train’s final destination in Edmonton on July 8th, the organizers of the train project hope to have it contain donated documents and artifacts that will represent a cross-section of the personal immigration experiences of the Ukrainians who started coming to Canada in 1891.  The Embassy is putting out a call to people living in the places where the Pioneer Train will stop to donate memorabilia from the trips to Canada taken by their ancestors, from the smallest of shipping receipts, telegrams, passports, diaries, to larger items like kitchenware, hand-tools, clothing, small furnishings, and other items

“While there are numerous collections in the museums of Canada that tell what happened to the Ukrainian immigrants after they came to Canada, information that speaks of the journey from the towns and villages of present-day Ukraine to this country is harder to find.  Our Train hopes to contribute to this lesser-developed aspect of Ukrainian-Canadian history by collecting it along the way and filing our symbolic trunk, which in Ukraine was called a skrynia or kufer.  After we complete our journey in a few weeks, this new collection of Canadian history will be donated to a professional museum”, said Dr. Ihor Ostash, Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada.

The Historical Train of Ukrainian Pioneers will leave Halifax on June 24th, and will retrace the rail journey taken by many Ukrainians.  It will have several-day stopovers in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Edmonton.

January, 2011

Dear Parishioners, Former Parishioners, Families & Friends,

St. Michael’s the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church will be celebrating its centennial in 2011. As we approach this milestone, regardless of whether we are current or past parishioners, or friends of St. Michael’s Parish, our reflections will remind us of years past when we, our parents or grandparents immigrated to Canada from Ukraine, to begin new lives and establish new roots. St. Michael’s Church, the first Ukrainian Catholic parish in Quebec, was founded in 1911, as the result of an official visit to Canada by our famous Metropolitan, Servant-of-God Andrey Sheptytsky.
To celebrate this special event, many preparatory projects are under way, such as the publication of a commemorative book and the installation of a memorial plaque. As well, many other activities, events and displays of archival material have been planned.
We ask you to support the centennial celebrations by making a donation to the St. Michael’s Church Centennial Celebration Fund. Please complete the enclosed donation cardand send it by e-mail or by post. On October 29th and 30st, 2011, St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish will hold two events to officially celebrate its centennial. You are cordially invited to participate in the festivities, to meet up with old friends and acquaintances. On Saturday, October 29th, formal centennial celebrations will begin with a banquet supper at the reception hall Le Rizz: 6630 Jarry East, St. Leonard, QC H1P 1W3. On Sunday October the 30st at 10: 00 a.m., a Pontifical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by our bishop Stephen Chmilar and invited clergy. The unveiling of a memorial plaque will take place following the service and group photograph. We will keep you informed about events through the “Ukrainian Time” broadcasts. You may consult our website at http://www.ukemonde.com/stmich.htm, as well as our Facebook page, or simply call us at: 514-521-2234. We can also e-mail you; simply forward us your e-mail address. Please tell your friends and families about this event, as we may be missing a number of addresses. A community’s strength is its people. Your contribution, whether in the form of a donation, a greeting in the commemorative book, or the sharing of your photographs and memories, will form part of the tribute to our predecessors’ accomplishments. We look forward to seeing you at the events and take this opportunity to thank you for your support.
