Montreal's Ukrainian community gathered at the Ukrainian Youth Centre on Sunday, October 22, 2000 to pay homage to the fighters of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), who during and following the Second World War fought both the Nazi and the Moscow-backed Soviet regimes for the freedom of Ukraine. This year's celebration was marked by a special recognition of the 50th anniversary of the death of the UPA's beloved supreme commander, General Roman Shukhevych (noms de guerre Taras Chuprynka), who died in a firefight with Soviet MVD troops on March 5, 1950 in Bilhoroshcha near Lviv, Ukraine. Opening words were delivered by Anya Harasymovich, head of SUM's Montreal branch, with the keynote speech given by the Ukrainian Canadian Congess' president, Evhen Czolij. The program included performances by the Montreal branch of the Ukrainian Youth Assocoation's (SUM) brass band, Trymbita, and the melodic voices of their choir, Vidlunya, both under the musical direction of Svitlana Kolesnyk and a montage of partisan poetry recitals by members of SUM, under the artistic direction of Marika Czolij. The crowd was also treated to the words of Montreal actor Hryhory Hladiy, who spoke of the forthcoming film, The Undefeated, on the life of General Roman Shukhevych, which should be premiered shortly. In this long-awaited film, Hladiy plays the leading role of General Shukhevych. Closing the successful and much appreciated event was Stepan Rebizant, of the Brotherhood of Former UPA Fighters.
