Tammy Lee Shewchuk
Proud to be Ukrainian

The Ukrainian community of Montreal was very blessed to have a visit with Tammy Lee Shewchuk, at Ukrainian Saturday School this past Saturday, April 6, 2002.  She had the opportunity to tell the young audience of over 150 children who attend  Ukrainian Saturday School in honor of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky in Montreal, of her gold medal exploits with Canada's Women's National Hockey Team at the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City.  She was greeted with flowers which were presented to her by three of the young students.  She then had a small presentation for half an hour explaining her upbringing and talked about how proud she was of her Ukrainian heritage.  Tammy Lee explained to her audience how her grandparents played an important role in her upbringing and teaching her to speak Ukrainian.  Tammy Lee, also talked about her progression in the hockey ranks playing on the many teams one of which was a team AAA Midget Boys with the Lac St-Louis Lions in 1994-1995, where she was the only girl on the team.  She also went on to talk about her educational background where she just completed her Bachelor in English Literature at Harvard University.  There Tammy Lee also played for the Harvard women's hockey team, where she set all new scoring records with her team and in the University ranks.  Tammy Lee closed of the discussion session expressing her desire to work in the media field as a broadcaster.  Hopefully if Tammy has it her way,  we will be seeing quite a lot of her in the coming future.
Tammy Lee then took the time to meet with the young audience individually and to pose for photographs with her gold medal proudly hanging around her neck.  She signed autographs for every child and took time to pass on her encouragement to all that wanted to talk to her.  In the audience were also present, her proud father Jerry Shewchuk and aunt Anna.      .
Tammy Lee was extremely happy about her encounter with the young Ukrainian school children and was invited to take part in the upcoming celebration this summer at the Independence Day outdoor picnic which is being planned for some time in September 2002.  We hope to see Tammy Lee there.
